The Cisco 2821 Integrated Services Router (ISR) is part of Cisco’s original ISR Generation 1 series, engineered to support the integration of multiple services—including voice, data, security, and wireless—into a single, compact routing platform for small to medium-sized business or branch office deployments.
The 2821 offers:
Two integrated 10/100 Ethernet ports
Support for Cisco Call Manager Express (CME) and SRST for IP telephony
Integrated VPN hardware acceleration for secure communications
Advanced security features such as firewall, intrusion prevention, and Cisco IOS security capabilities
Modular slots supporting HWICs, VICs, and AIMs, allowing flexible expansion for WAN interfaces, voice modules, and additional services
Digital Signal Processor (DSP) slots for voice applications such as conferencing and transcoding
While now considered end-of-life (EOL), the Cisco 2821 remains a reliable solution in many legacy environments. It was designed to simplify network architecture by consolidating multiple devices into one integrated system, lowering total cost of ownership while maintaining robust performance and service integration.
